Charles H. Ballou, a professional engraver, was born 1840 in Ohio. He served as Private in the Company of Orwin J. Crane, 1st Regiment of the Ohio Volunteer Infantry. The two sketchbooks contain drawings of soldiers and camp scenes, June to September 1861.
