At the start of the Civil War the Alexandria, Loudon, & Hampshire Railroad (ALHRR), had only been in operation for less than one year.  The line was running with three locomotives from Alexandria to Leesburg. The ALHRR truss bridges were vulnerable to attack from Confederate raiders.  Along the Four Mile Run Valley troops from the 1st Ohio regiment were tasked to protecting them.
